VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 19 / 103 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND STEWART (ALCHORN), Aletha Elizabeth WWII Private Aletha Elizabeth Alchorn was born in Fairview in 1922 to parents Urban and Violet Alchorn. Her siblings were Lloyd, Vera, and Clarence. Aletha served with the Canadian Dental Corp as dental assistant from 1939 to 1944 in Newfoundland, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Following the war, Aletha married Harry L. Stewart and they settled in Montague where they raised a large family. Harry brought six children from his first union and together, Aletha and Harry had seven more children. Aletha lived in Montague until her death in 2011. SMITH, George Preston WWII George was born in Kinkora, PEI on September 3, 1923, to William Wilfred and Mabel Smith. He enlisted in the Army on April 1, 1943, and went to England on March 25, 1944. He saw action in France, Belgium and the Netherlands with the North Shore Regiment, RCIC during World War II. He was accidentally killed on November 12, 1944, in the Netherlands. SHERREN, William Douglas WWII William was born on November 25, 1914, in Crapaud, the son of William D. Sherren and Florence Amanda Carrier. On January 29, 1937, he married Florence Maud Strickland. They had two children, Hubert and Harrison Blair. He enlisted in the Army on January 6, 1940, and served in Canada, England, France and Germany during World War II. He was an officer with the Royal Canadian Artillery and died on April 28, 1945, of wounds received when his vehicle drove over a mine in Germany. Captain Sherren received an MBE for gallant and distinguished service in the field.
