VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 19 / 59 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND HOWATT, Chesley WWI Chesley was born on July 24, 1886, in Tryon, PEI. He was the son of Robert Newton Howatt and Elizabeth Wilson. He enlisted in the Army with the 50th Battalion on June 2, 1915, and went overseas on October 24, 1915. He was sent to France on August 10, 1916, while preparing for the Battle of Vimy Ridge, he received a gunshot wound to the face due to a rifle grenade that exploded near him. After initial treatment, in Etaples, France, he was sent to England. He was sent back to Canada and received his formal discharge on March 18, 1918 in Halifax due to defective vision. On September 2, 1918, he enlisted again and was discharged on July 17, 1919. He married on December 3, 1918. Chesley passed away in 1938. HOROBIN, Robert KOREA Robert was born in Middlesbrough, Yorks, England in 1934. He served in the Army with the Royal Signals in England, Korea, Japan, Singapore and Malaya. He was a graduate of RMA Sandhurst and received the Campaign Medal-Malaya. GORVEATT, Oswald WWII Oswald Gorveatt was born in Rocky Point on October 12, 1926, to Parents Herbert and Sarah Ann (MacDougall) Gorveatt. Oswald had five siblings: Carrie, Ralph, Ernest, Amos and Wendell. He enlisted in Charlottetown and served in the Infantry in Kentville, Halifax, Aldershot and in Ontario. On completion of his service, he married Marguerite MacDougall of Fairview, PEI. Following his service, the couple purchased a farm in Rocky Point and farmed strawberries, cold crops, potatoes and raised livestock. Oswald and Marguerite raised two children Rozanna and Pamela. He lived on the farm until his death on December 21, 2016 and is buried in the New Dominion Cemetery.
