VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 19 / 97 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND SHERREN, Douglas Haig WWII Douglas was born on April 7, 1918, in Crapaud, PEI, the son of David Stuart Sherren of Crapaud and Laura Carrier of Earnscliffe, PEI. On November 20, 1940, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. He was on the HMCS Drumheller K167. He went from able seaman to a Petty Officer. Douglas was in the Navy from the beginning of World War II until the end, seeing a lot of action. He was discharged on August 28, 1945. Douglas received the Commemorative Medal of the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Normandy in recognition of those who took part in the liberation of this region of France and of Europe. He also received the 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal 1939-1945. Douglas came to the United States in 1952 then moved to the Territory of Alaska with his wife, Roma (Ellsworth) Sherren, and daughter Donna. Roma passed away in 1970. In 1989, Douglas remarried to Doris M. (Riggs) Stewart. Doris passed away in 1997. From 1967 to 1984, Douglas worked for the State of Alaska Marine Highways System for seventeen years on the Tustumena. He retired in 1984. From there on, Douglas would travel from PEI to Zephyrhills, Florida. He enjoyed gardening and fixing things. Douglas passed away on May 10, 2000. SHERREN, Clifford Elmer WWII Clifford was born in Crapaud, PEI on January 24, 1909, the son of Samuel Sherren and Ellen Boyle Sherren. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He served in Canada until the end of the war as a LAC Aircraftman. He settled in Victoria upon retirement. Clifford married Evelyn MacWilliams from West Cape. He passed away in 1979.
