VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 20 / 33 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND This well-known poster from the Korean War Gallery of the War Museum in Ottawa shows Pvt. Heath Matthews awaiting medical attention after a night patrol in which two Canadians were killed and some wounded by shrapnel, including Matthews. Heath Matthews was born in 1932 in Alberton, PEI, son of Emerson Matthews and Maud (Fraser). He served as a signaller with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment during 1952-1953. The photograph was taken by Sgt. Paul E. Tomelin, an Army photographer with the Army P.R. Unit. This photo became famous as the “Face of War” and is a graphic depiction of the horror of war. Heath died in 2013 at Leawood, Kansas, US at age 82. “The Face of War” James “Jim” MacAulay Born in Midgell, PE on July 23, 1940, he was the son of the late Archibald and Bernadette (MacDonald) MacAulay. Jim spent most of his career as Principal of Morell Regional High School and retired from the Eastern School District Board Office. He was a proud Alumnus of St. Dunstan’s University Class of 1962 and was a lifelong learner. In 1967, he received his Bachelor of Education and in 1978 he received his Masters of School Administration from St. Francis Xavier University. Jim received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from UPEI in 2014. James joined the Morell Royal Canadian Legion in 1967. He held various positions in the Branch. The only positions that he did not hold was 1st Vice-President and President. He served as Deputy and Zone Commander for Kings County Zone. James was elected to Provincial Command in 1991 and served as vice-president. He was re-elected in 1993 and served once again as vice-president. In 1995, James was elected to 1st Vice President of PEI Command in 1995. In 1997, James was acclaimed Provincial President. While on Provincial Command, he served as chairman of Constitution and Laws, Chairman of Youth, Leadership and Development and also Resolutions. He received the Meritorious service medal in 1994. He was very much involved in his community and received numerous honours and awards for his volunteer work, including the Order of PEI. James passed away on July 21, 2023, just two days short of his 83rd birthday.
