He was married and living in Winnipeg, Manitoba when he decided to enlist. He was working as a confectioner. Private McNeill volunteered in Valcartier, Quebec on September 23, 1914. He was 22 years old when he joined the 8th Battalion. The 1st battle of Ypres took place in October and November 1914 and the 2nd battle began in April 1915. The Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. The violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal. Private McNeill was killed on April 25, 1915 at Ypres while serving with the army, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) 8th. His next of kin was his wife Mrs. G. McNeill. Private McNeill is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders (covering the area known as the Ypres Salient). His sacrifice is commemorated on Page 27 of the First World War Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower. McLEAN, Rena WWII Rena MacLean was born in Souris, PEI. She was a nursing sister during World War II and was drowned when her ship, Landover Castle, was torpedoed and went down while taking wounded soldiers back from the war. McKIE, John James WWII John was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1910. He served with the Carleton York Regiment 1st Division from 1940 to 1946. John passed away in 1984.
